Trend Micro snatches Data Leak Prevention specialist Provilla

analysisJump right to our comments

With Data Leak Prevention being such a hot topic right now, it's not a surprise antivirus vendors are jumping in the acquisition feast. Trend Micro just snatched DLP specialist Provilla, in an undisclosed deal.

Provilla secures the enterprise's data by fingerprinting it and deploying control agents on the desktops. Its LeakProof solution traces files from within the Windows Kernel and monitors all file-handling operations (open, read, copy, dump, attach to a mail, etc...).

LeakProof uses desktops clients and an appliance server to centrally manage what files are deemed sensitive, and to track their use. Provilla developed what it calls "DataDNA", which is essentially a fingerprinting method allowing to track files over the company's network and mobile assets. Provilla claims this fingerprint stays the same even if the file is altered and saved as a new document.

The details of this acquisition is unknown. Trend Micro announced Provilla will keep operating as a subsidiary, with its products still sold as stand-alone solutions for the near term. The technology, of course, will progressively be integrated in Trend's own product line.

Our comments :

Just like what they did with anti-spyware and later with IPS, antivirus vendors are leveraging their lock-down on desktop real estate (who else can get a new technology on corporate desktops without deploying a new client ?). They essentially try to introduce new technologies to fight the ever-commoditization of the antivirus. It's not certain, though, that Data Leak Prevention is well suited to become such a commodity, as it requires customization and fine-tuning to be really effective. That, and most companies don't even know (or bother to know) what is sensitive to them ! Nevertheless, we can bet other acquisitions in this market will be announced, and small fries will get absorbed.
