Operation Bot Roast : when the FBI tracks botmasters
By Jerome Saiz, Mon, December 3rd, 2007
Dubbed "Operation Bot Roast", the FBI operation against botmasters aims at disrupting the botnet economy. And it's actually showing some success.
In the past six month, FBI-led Operation Bot Roast led to disrupting operations of 1 million+ bots and the arrest of eight suspects worldwide. They are suspected of running various size botnets and causing a total of more than $20 millions in losses.
Operation Bot Roast is an ongoing worldwide operation. While it's led by the FBI, other US agencies such as the Secret Service or the Department of Justice and foreign law enforcement agencies are also part of the operation, along with private organizations such as the Carnegie Mellon University CERT.
