Kaspersky goes into hosted services

analysisJump right to our comments

Kaspersky Labs today unveiled a set of three hosted security services to cover email, web and instant messaging.

With Kaspersky Hosted Security Service, russian software vendor Kaspersky makes a foray into the MSSP market. Its service offering, billed annually, will cover the three main data entry points within the enterprise : email, web and instant messaging. It will operate by re-routing the enterprise traffic through various datacenters around the world.

The company offers a Service Level Agreement on platform's availability (99,99%) and various other items such as delays in mail delivery and false-positives. Of course, this stands as long as the customer's traffic is not "out-of the norm", which is yet to be defined.

The technologies involved with KHSS are the regular Kaspersky Labs products, and one more : BitHunter. Previously a tool kept in-house so malware authors could not test their creations against it before releasing them, BitHunter is included in the managed antivirus scans performed by KHSS.

Our comments :

While very much known and appreciated in Europe, Kaspersky Labs has some difficulties getting a decent market share in America. This MSSP business could help penetrating this market, as it will exclusively be offered through resellers. US companies not willing to take a chance with a relatively small Russian vendor are more prone to buy a fully managed security service from their local reseller. And most of them will not care much about who provides the back-end solution.
