The Gartner study, while small in size (4500 adults), shows a disturbing trend : 3,3% of adults who acknowledged to receiving phishing emails said they lost money to the scam. A total of $3,2 billion was lost in 2007 to phishing. The average loss per incident declined from $1,244 in 2006 to $886.
Phishing victims accounted for 2,3% in 2006, down from 2,9% in 2005.
The Gartner study does not make a guess as why phishing was so much more successful in 2007.
